Are you having trouble accessing your Slingbox? Does it keep asking your for the Administrator password over and over again? And resetting the Slingbox and trying to reconfigure it from scratch didn't help?
If so, there is a good chance that the cause of the problem is a conflict with some software that you recently installed or updated.
Check your PC to see if you have these programs or similar McAfee software installed:
- McAfee Security Center 7
- McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007
- McAfee Total Protection Suite
If so, here are some solutions so you can have your Slingbox and your security too. Basically, the McAfee software is preventing your computer from communicating with your Slingbox. To fix this, we'll disable your security software temporarily, reconfigure your Slingbox, and then start your security software back up again.
Just follow these steps:
1. From the Start menu, choose the Run command.

2. In the Run window, type services.msc as shown below, then click OK.
3. When the Services window opens, scroll down to locate McAfee Redirector Service.
4. Right-click the McAfee Redirector Service listing, then choose Stop from the contextual (right-click) menu that appears.
5. Close the Services window.
6. Next, you'll change your router settings just a bit to to allow your Slingbox to use any one of these ports: 5000, 5024, or 5121. Wait! Don't run away. We'll help you with the Slingbox Setup Assistant and the Slingbox Network Assistant. Together, they'll walk you through it.
Here's some background info: you're going to change the "port" setting in your router for your Slingbox. Think of a port as a special door through which only certain data can go. Your router has (potentially) thousands of ports, although it's probably only using a few of them. Normally, your Slingbox would use port number 5001. Instead of that, though, you're going to substitute ports 5000, 5024, or 5121 (any one of them will likely do). Why use these ports? Because they're ignored by the McAfee software. Using them stops SlingPlayer from repeatedly asking for your Administrator password. (If one doesn't work, repeat this step and try another.)
7. To get started, launch SlingPlayer, then choose Setup Assistant from the Settings menu.
8. On the introductory page, click Next.
9. Select the Slingbox that you want to work with (if you have more than one), and/or enter the Administrator password for the Slingbox, then click Next.
10. From the left panel, click Setup Internet Viewing.
11. Beneath the picture, click where it says If you're an advanced user and would like to configure your router manually, click here. (Again: we'll walk you through this.)
12. In the pop-up menus, select the manufacturer and the model of your router. You'll also need to know the login information (usually user ID and password) for your router. Click Go, then follow the directions in the Slingbox Network Assistant.
IMPORTANT: While you're using the Slingbox Network Assistant, do not change any values except for the port number (from 5001, or whatever it is now, to 5000, 5024, or 5121).
13. Finish up with the Slingbox Setup Assistant and the Slingbox Network Assistant.
14. When you're all done changing the port number, go to the Start menu, choose Run, type services.msc and click OK, just like you did in Step 2.
15. When the Services window opens again, scroll down to the McAfee Redirector Service listing. Right-click it, then choose Start from the context (right-click) menu that appears. Note: This is the opposite of what you did in Step 4.
16. Close the Services window.
Now you should be able to open SlingPlayer and connect to your Slingbox without any more difficulties!
